This fifteen week course will equip students to use Luxology’s ‘modo’ version 501 for design, visualization, photorealistic illustration, and simple animation. The course will use exercises inspired by the packaging design industry, but the content itself is applicable to anyone wishing to use modo for design-related modeling and visualization.
I like to think of this course as something kind of like those NES magazines circa 1989, where you could find out that up-down-left-right-A-B-START was the key to greatness… Ah but I flatter myself.
Why Modo?
Luxology’s modo is a digital 3D modeling, sculpting, texturing, and rendering tool released in 2004 by the same developers who created another modeling and animation tool called Lightwave 3D in the early 90′s. To Lightwave users, modo will feel very familiar.
The key strengths of modo over its competitors?Lightwave, 3DSMax, XSI/SoftImage, and Maya to name a few?are its relatively simple interface, innovative modeling and UV-ing tools, its powerful image-based sculpting toolset, and its fast and flexible physically-based rendering engine. modo for Windows can read SolidWorks part and assembly files natively, and a powerful Rhino .3dm import/export plugin is also included.

Modo is used by 3D modelers and sculptors, illustrators, designers, and photographers to model, sculpt, texture, and render lifelike images and animations. It is a creative communication tool.
Modo is not…
modo is not a replacement for traditional CAD software, but a complement to it. Though files for simple rapid prototyping can be created directly in modo, it is not a viable tool for functional prototyping or mechanical design. modo is a rapid visualization tool, intended for the fast and efficient generation of 2D still images and animation?not physical models or prototypes.
